Exposition "Le Rêveur de la Forêt" au Musée Zadkine

Puisant à des sources multiples – poésie, philosophie, sciences – Le Rêveur de la Forêt croise les époques, les médiums et les genres. L’exposition réunit presque une centaine d’œuvres d’une quarantaine d’artistes (Karel Appel, Jean Arp, Jean Dubuffet, Paul Gauguin, Séraphine, André Derain, Constantin Brancusi, etc.).

Grâce à des prêts exceptionnels de musées, de collections privées ou d’artistes, elle éclaire de manière inédite l’œuvre d’Ossip Zadkine, la matérialité vivante caractéristique de ses sculptures et leur lien organique à la forêt. Autobiographique, le titre renvoie au sculpteur, à son attachement intime à la forêt.
L’exposition interroge la fascination faite de peur et d’enchantement mêlés que suscite la forêt dans l’imaginaire commun. Refuge du vivant, du sauvage, du sacré, le monde sylvestre représente ce qui échappe aux entreprises humaines de domestication et de rationalisation du monde ; ce qui leur préexiste et leur survivra.
Dans un contexte marqué par la montée de préoccupations environnementales et écologiques, ce projet engage une réflexion anthropologique et artistique autour d’un thème qui a donné naissance à de nombreux chefs – d’œuvre dès les débuts de la révolution industrielle, et qui reste d’une brûlante actualité chez les artistes contemporains.

Drawing from multiple sources – poetry, philosophy, science – The Dreamer of the Forest crosses eras, mediums and genres. The exhibition brings together nearly a hundred works by some forty artists (Karel Appel, Jean Arp, Jean Dubuffet, Paul Gauguin, Séraphine, Andre Derain, Constantin Brancusi, etc.). Thanks to outstanding loans from museums, private collections or artists, it uniquely illuminates the work of Ossip Zadkine, the living material characteristic of his sculptures and their organic link to the forest. Autobiographical, the title refers to the sculptor, his intimate attachment to the forest.
The exhibition questions the fascination made of fear and enchantment mixed up by the forest in the common imagination. Refuge of the living, the savage, the sacred, the Sylvan world represents what escapes the human enterprises of domestication and rationalization of the world; what pre-exists them and will survive them.
In a context marked by the rise of environmental and ecological concerns, this project involves an anthropological and artistic reflection around a theme that gave birth to many masterpieces from the beginning of the industrial revolution, and which remains a burning news in contemporary artists.
