Charlie Chaplin : L’Homme orchestre à la Philarmonie de Paris jusqu’au 26 janvier 2020

Cette exposition vous propose de redécouvrir l’œuvre du maître du cinéma muet dans sa dimension musicale et, plus largement, dans son rapport étroit à la danse, au rythme, à l’illusion de la parole et du son, tous rigoureusement « orchestré » dans chacune de ses œuvres.

Charles Spencer Chaplin, né le 16 avril 1889 et mort le 25 décembre 1977 à Corsier -sur- Vevey (Suisse), est un acteur, réalisateur, scénariste, producteur et compositeur britannique qui devint une idole du cinéma muet grâce à son personnage Charlot.
Chaplin grandit dans la misère entre un père absent et une mère en grandes difficultés financières, tous deux artistes de music-hall. A l’âge de cinq ans, il fait sa première apparition sur scène. A 19 ans, il est remarqué par l’imprésario Fred Karno et réalise une tournée aux Etats-Unis. Il joue la première fois au cinéma en 1914 dans le film « Pour gagner sa vie ».
En 1918, il était devenu l’une des personnalités les plus connues du monde.
En 1919, Chaplin cofonde la société United Artist et obtient ainsi le contrôle total sur ses œuvres.
En 1972, l’Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences, lui a remis Oscar d’honneur pour sa contribution inestimable à l’industrie cinématographique et plusieurs de ses œuvres sont aujourd’hui considérées comme faisant partie des plus grands films de tous les temps.

This exhibition invites you to rediscover the work of the master of silent cinema in its musical dimension and, more broadly, in its close relationship to dance, rhythm, the illusion of speech and sound, all rigorously “orchestrated” in each of his works.
Charles Spencer Chaplin, born April 16, 1889 and died December 25, 1977 in Corsier-sur-Vevey (Switzerland), is a British actor, director, screenwriter, producer and composer who became an idol of silent cinema thanks to his character Charlot.
Chaplin grew up in misery between an absent father and a mother in great financial difficulty, both artists of music hall. At the age of five, he made his first appearance on stage. At 19, he was noticed by impresario Fred Karno and toured the United States. He first appeared in cinema in 1914 in the film “To earn a living”.
By 1918 he had become one of the most famous figures in the world.
In 1919, Chaplin co-founded the company United Artist and thus obtained total control over his works.
In 1972, the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences presented him with an honorary Oscar for his invaluable contribution to the film industry, and many of his works are now considered to be among the greatest films of all time.
